The annual catch of professional fishing in inland waters has been about 5,000 tonnes, which is less than 5 per cent of the catch from the sea. The value of the catch from inland waters is over 20 per cent of that from the sea, because it consists mainly of more valuable fish used for human consumption. Professional fishing is particularly important in northern and eastern Finland. The main species is vendace.
