Storms, moose and annosus root rot the main causes for forest damages

Storms, snow, moose and annosus root rot cause the most serious damage in forests in Finland. Forest fires have been successfully prevented through efficient fire control. So far the health of Finnish forests is very good, but climate warming and immigrant species may increase the risks. Forest administration has prepared for extensive storm damages in forests by compiling national and regional preparedness plans. The scope of the national preparedness plan is being extended to also cover other sudden, significant damages in forests.

Legislation aims to ensure that the health of forests is not weakened in the treatment of forests, wood harvesting and storage of wood. The Regional Forestry Centres control the prevention of insect and fungi damages. The Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla monitors the health of forests and changes in this.
