Diverse and reliable information is needed for the development of sustainable forest management and preparation of forest policy. Information for the Ministry's needs is produced at the Finnish Forest Research Institute and in research and development projects of various organisations, which are funded by the uncommitted joint research funds of the Ministry.
Finland participates in European forest research in support of the European forest policy through funding of the European Forest Institute (EFI).
The Ministry also funds the research and development work of the Work Efficiency Institute TTS to promote, among other things, small-scale entrepreneurship in the forest sector.
