Five public research organisations work within the administrative sphere of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry:
- MTT Agrifood Research Finland
- The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla)
- The Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute (RKTL)
- The Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI)
- The Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira)
The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE)
primarily operates under the Ministry of Environment, but the Ministry of
Agriculture and Forestry guides SYKE’s work related to water management issues.
MTT, Metla, RKTL, SYKE, FGI and Evira have all recently joined forces in forming the LYNET research consortium. LYNET coordinates research work and the provision of expert services, research infrastructure and support services as well as management of information databases related to renewable resources and environment. LYNET is not a conventional organisation or institution, but represents a new way of organising work collaboratively.
The Advisory Board for Sectoral Research is a government level forum through which Finland’s ministries jointly determine horizontal research topics. Led by the Ministry of Education, the board also discusses development needs related to sectoral research in Finland.
Finland’s Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation (SHOKs) are new public-private partnerships designed to speed up innovation processes. Their main goal is to thoroughly renew industry clusters and foster radical innovations. Our research institutes are active participants in three of the six SHOKs:
- The Forest Cluster
- CLEEN (Energy and environment)
- SalWe (Health and Well-Being)
