There are about 450 major dams in Finland. Of these 380 are in watercourses and the rest are waste dams. The aim is to prevent any potential flood and dam damages in advance. As set down in the Dam Safety Act, the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment are responsible for the control of dam safety under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In the case of accidents, however, the rescue operations are the responsibility of the Ministry of the Interior and rescue services under it.
