Of the drinking waters distributed by the water plants, 60% is groundwater or artificial groundwater. The plants abstract groundwater about 7 million cubic metres a day. People living in sparsely populated regions use mainly well water and groundwater obtained from springs. Especially in the capital region (Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo), Turku and Oulu most of the drinking water is purified surface water.
