Baltic 21 - cooperation in sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region

The Baltic 21 is a regional action programme on sustainable development, which is founded on the principles set down in the Agenda 21 Programme adopted at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992.

The Baltic 21 Action Programme was adopted at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Council of the Baltic Sea States CBSS in 1998. The preparation and implementation of the programme has been a joint effort of all the nine coastal states around the Baltic Sea, European Union and a large number of associations, financial institutions and NGOs.

The Baltic 21 establishes objectives and measures for various sectors that are important for the environment and inhabitants of the Baltic Sea region: agriculture, forestry, manufacturing industry, energy, tourism, transportation, regional planning and education and training.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is particularly active in the forest sector cooperation.
