What do we do?

The Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry creates the conditions for the sustainable and diversified use of renewable natural resources and for developing the economic and leisure-time activities of the countryside. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry also ensures that the commodities obtained from renewable natural resources are safe and of high quality.

The activities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry comprise agriculture, horticulture and forestry, fisheries, game management and reindeer farming, other rural livelihoods and rural development, the use and management of water resources, land surveying, and veterinary care and the related control of animal and plant health and foodstuffs of animal origin.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry contributes to the development of the common agricultural policy and fisheries policy of the European Union. The Ministry implements decisions within these sectors and in the field of veterinary medicine in Finland. The Ministry is responsible for the preparation of legislation, financing of support measures and the monitoring and control related to their implementation, as well as steering and support of research and advisory services.
